QuickBooks CSV bank import: date format and column errors fixed

Most failed CSV bank imports come down to four things.

  1. Wrong layout. QuickBooks wants 3 columns (Date, Description, Amount) or 4 columns (Date, Description, Credit, Debit). Delete balance, category and memo columns.
  2. Mixed date formats. Every row must use the same format. Intuit's help suggests one consistent format and asks you to split out a day-of-week if your bank adds one (e.g. "20/11/2022 TUE"). Pick the matching format in the column-mapping step: a US file (MM/DD/YYYY) read as DD/MM swaps day and month without warning for days 1–12.
  3. Amount formatting. Remove currency symbols and thousands separators, write negatives as -123.45 rather than (123.45), and leave zero cells blank.
  4. Header and footer junk. Remove account summaries above the header row and "Total" lines at the bottom.

Shortcut: paste the CSV into our free tie-out checker and download the "QuickBooks 3-column CSV", which is already normalized.

Two ways to finish faster

Free: paste any transaction CSV into our statement tie-out checker. It runs entirely in your browser (nothing is uploaded), shows the first row where the balance breaks, and can export a QuickBooks-ready CSV or .qbo file.

Done for you: send the PDF statements and get QBO, Xero and CSV files plus a tie-out sheet proving each month matches the opening and closing balance. $15 per statement-month, or $149 for a 12-month catch-up. See pricing

Bookkeeper or firm? Your first statement-month is free, one per firm. Claim it.
