QuickBooks Online "file too large" bank upload error: how to fix it
QuickBooks Online accepts bank upload files of up to 350 KB and up to 1,000 transaction lines (Intuit's published limits). Larger files fail with "file too large" or a generic upload error.
Fix for CSV files
- Open the CSV in a spreadsheet and split it by date into files under 1,000 rows each. Splitting on a month boundary is easiest to check.
- Delete extra columns QuickBooks doesn't need. Keep Date, Description and Amount, or Date, Description, Credit and Debit.
- Save as CSV (UTF-8) and upload each file in date order.
Fix for .qbo / .qfx files
A .qbo file can't be split safely by hand: it has a header and a balance block. Either re-download shorter date ranges from your bank, or convert the file to CSV and split that. Our free tie-out checker can turn any split CSV into a valid .qbo file in your browser.
Check you didn't lose anything
Add up each split file and compare the sum to the original. Then reconcile in QuickBooks against the statement ending balance.
Two ways to finish faster
Free: paste any transaction CSV into our statement tie-out checker. It runs entirely in your browser (nothing is uploaded), shows the first row where the balance breaks, and can export a QuickBooks-ready CSV or .qbo file.
Done for you: send the PDF statements and get QBO, Xero and CSV files plus a tie-out sheet proving each month matches the opening and closing balance. $15 per statement-month, or $149 for a 12-month catch-up. See pricing
Bookkeeper or firm? Your first statement-month is free, one per firm. Claim it.
