Xero bank statement import errors: CSV fixes that work
- "Invalid date" / dates in the wrong month. Use one date format and confirm it on Xero's import screen.
- Money in and out reversed. Xero expects a single signed Amount: positive for money received, negative for money spent. Credit card exports often use the opposite sign, so flip it.
- Statement balance doesn't match. A row was dropped or doubled. Check that opening balance + amounts = closing balance before you import.
- Duplicate statement lines. If a bank feed already covers part of the period, import only the gap. If you import duplicates, delete those statement lines from the bank account's account transactions or statement view (check Xero's help for the current menu).
- Extra columns. Keep Date, Amount, Payee, Description and Reference, and remove running balances and categories.
Our free browser-based checker finds the exact row where a balance breaks.
Two ways to finish faster
Free: paste any transaction CSV into our statement tie-out checker. It runs entirely in your browser (nothing is uploaded), shows the first row where the balance breaks, and can export a QuickBooks-ready CSV or .qbo file.
Done for you: send the PDF statements and get QBO, Xero and CSV files plus a tie-out sheet proving each month matches the opening and closing balance. $15 per statement-month, or $149 for a 12-month catch-up. See pricing
